Dental veneers can be a great solution to many cosmetic problems. Veneers are thin shells, usually made of porcelain that are customized to match the other teeth in your smile and fit directly over the fronts of your teeth. Veneers can be used to conceal chipped and stained teeth. They can also be used to lengthen teeth that are too short, or to close the gap between teeth that are unevenly spaced.
A small amount of your tooth enamel needs to be removed to place your veneers. With that in mind, before you talk to your dentist about veneers, you should be sure that you understand everything you need to do to make your veneers last. With the proper care, your veneers will last between 10 and 15 years.
Your veneers are strong, but not indestructible. Hard foods, ice and everyday objects can cause them to chip, so think before you eat, and before you put something in your mouth. Your veneers can be stained by dark-colored foods and beverages. Your dentist can polish your veneers if they become stained, but the problem cannot be fixed by whitening treatments or toothpaste. If you habitually grind or clench your teeth, a condition that is known as bruxism, you can damage your veneers. You will need to work with your dentist to treat your bruxism, or your dentist may need to prescribe a night guard while you sleep.
