You’re headed to the store? Excellent! This is the time to buy cleaning tools for your teeth! You probably know that you need the basics—a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss—but when you face all the options at the store (which can sometimes be overwhelming), how do you know what is best for your smile?

Before you start shopping, know that a basic ground rule to follow is to look for products with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal. These products are rigorously tested for their safety and effectiveness.

Let’s say that you hit the toothbrush section first. Look for a toothbrush with soft bristles and a smaller toothbrush head. The soft bristles will clean your teeth and also care for your gums. The small head will help you fit the brush in your mouth. It can also help you clean each tooth individually. If you want to upgrade your smile’s care, consider an electric toothbrush.

Next, you see toothpaste. It’s best to buy toothpaste that has fluoride. Daily exposure to fluoride can strengthen and nourish your teeth enamel and help your mouth fight tooth decay and enamel erosion.

Finally, you take a look at the floss. Traditional, shred-resistant floss can typically do a better job at hugging the sides of your teeth and cleaning along the gum line. But some people have a hard time consistently using it or don’t like it. If that’s the case for you, consider floss picks or a water flosser.
